A Prediction Market Participant Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Bets on Maduro's Downfall.

A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also made large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
