An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student walked over to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
