Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
